Essential Tips for Maintaining Your Lawn Mower For The Perfect Cut

Writer: Back Your Yard Staff MemberBack Your Yard Staff Member

A well-maintained lawn mower is key to a lush, healthy lawn and can extend the lifespan of your equipment. Whether you’re a seasoned lawn guru or a first-time homeowner, proper mower maintenance is a crucial step to maintaining your lawn.

Here’s a guide to keep your mower in top shape.

1. Regularly Check the Oil

Just like a car, your lawn mower needs oil to run smoothly. Check the oil level before each use and change it every 50 hours of operation or at least once a season. Use the type of oil recommended in the owner’s manual, and always check the oil level when the engine is cool.

2. Keep the Air Filter Clean

A clean air filter ensures that your mower runs efficiently. Check the air filter before each use and replace it if it’s clogged or dirty. A clean filter helps the engine breathe properly and can improve fuel efficiency.

3. Sharpen the Blades

Dull blades can tear grass rather than cut it cleanly, leading to a ragged lawn and increased strain on the engine. Sharpen the blades at least once a season, or more frequently if you mow frequently. You can either sharpen them yourself or have them professionally sharpened. A standard angle to sharpen your mower blades is 40 degrees. After each sharpening blades should be leveled. Leveled blades emit less wear and vibration on your small engine.

4. Clean the Deck

Grass clippings and debris can build up under the mower deck, affecting performance and causing rust. After each mowing session, check and clear the deck of any debris if necessary. Here’s how, the mower should be off and the blades disengaged, disconnect the spark plug to ensure no accidental start ups and use a putty knife or brush to remove clippings. You might also rinse the deck with water but ensure it is completely dry before using the mower again. Take special note to use a blower or air compressor to remove standing water from belt spindles or cables that may hold water for long periods.

5. Check and Replace Spark Plugs

Spark plugs are crucial for starting the mower. Check them regularly for signs of wear or carbon buildup and replace them if necessary. A new spark plug ensures reliable starting and optimal engine performance.

6. Inspect the Fuel System

Old or contaminated fuel can cause starting issues and poor engine performance. Use fresh fuel and consider using a fuel stabilizer to prevent the fuel from going stale if you’re storing the mower for an extended period. Regularly check the fuel filter and replace it if it’s clogged. Eventually gas lines should be replaced as ethanol fuel use and heat can slowly degrade them.

7. Maintain the Battery

For electric start mowers, the battery is essential. Check the battery regularly, clean any corrosion from the terminals using a wire brush, and ensure it is securely connected. If the battery isn’t holding a charge, it might need replacement. Some batteries other common electric areas would be the solenoid and starter. These are mechanical parts within the electrical system that should also be checked regularly.

8. Store Properly

When not in use, store your lawn mower in a dry, sheltered location. If possible, elevate it to prevent rust and check for leaks or any issues before storing. For winter storage, consider running the engine until the fuel is used up or adding a fuel stabilizer to reduce ethanol fuel breakdown.

9. Inspect Belts and Cables

Check belts and cables for wear and tear. Replace any frayed or damaged belts promptly to prevent further damage to the mower.  Ensure cables are properly adjusted and not frayed. Please note that cable tension and belt tensions vary per model so if you’re not comfortable making these adjustments on your own it’s best to take the equipment to an authorized service company.

10. Follow Manufacturer’s Guidelines

Always refer to your mower’s owner’s manual for specific maintenance instructions. The manual will provide detailed recommendations for your specific model and can guide you through any model-specific maintenance tasks.

Conclusion

Regular maintenance will keep your lawn mower running smoothly and efficiently, helping you achieve a beautiful, well-manicured lawn. By following these tips, you can avoid common equipment issues and extend the life of your equipment, ensuring it’s ready for every mowing season.
